Root Canal Therapy

Root Canal Therapy

Professional Root Canal Therapy

Three little words that can strike fear into most dental patients: Root Canal Therapy.

At Dr. Russo Dentistry there is no reason to fear! A root canal is simply nothing more than a filling that involves a different part of your tooth. When a tooth nerve gets infected, it just simply gets cleaned out and a permanent filling is placed, called a root canal therapy, or endodontic treatment.

Learn more about Russo Dentistry’s patient access to convenient Endodontic services performed in our facilities by our Root Canal Specialist partner, Dr. Wayne King.

At Russo Dentistry, we are a comprehensive care, full restoration practice. We are able to treat your dental problem in office and many times, same day.

Why Are Root Canals Considered Scary?

Often times a person seeking a root canal is in pain from a dental infection that has eaten its way into the nerve of the tooth, or from a fracture in a tooth that has advanced into the nerve of the tooth.   Typically, this allows communication between the nerve of the tooth and dental saliva (spit).  When this communication occurs, your saliva contains bacteria and viruses that contaminate the nerve of the tooth causing infection.  When a tooth is infected it is sometimes difficult to get numb making any dental procedure difficult and potentially painful.

Endodontist in Raleigh, Durham & Cary

Dr. Russo’s patients now have convenient access to Dr. Wayne King endodontic (root canal) dental services provided as a specialist service in our Russo Dentistry facilities. We are excited to partner with Dr. Wayne King to bring over two decades of dental experience to the Raleigh, Durham & Cary areas and as an added service to our Russo Dentistry patients.

By using expert diagnostics and advanced training we treat painful teeth first medically with antibiotics to calm any acute infections so that profound anesthesia can be achieved making your root canal procedure which makes it virtually painless.  You will also have the peace of mind knowing your tooth is treated by a root canal specialist.

Signs You May Need A Root Canal

  • Spontaneous aching pain
  • Pain that lingers to hot and cold for longer than a couple of minutes
  • Pain that wakes you up in the middle of the night
  • Pain that over-the-counter pain relievers can’t resolve
  • Fractured teeth requiring the use of the nerve canal of the tooth to anchor a base for a crown
  • Teeth with old crowns that may leak at the seams and become symptomatic
  • Sharp pain on biting
  • A tooth that has experienced trauma
  • A tooth with extensive decay
  • A funny or unusual taste in your mouth
  • A pimple or bubble on your gum that comes and goes

Root Canal Procedure

The root canal procedure has come a long way over the years. No longer do these procedures require many visits and hours of holding your mouth open! Raleigh cosmetic dentist Dr. Justin Russo educates his patients that a root canal is simply a different kind of filling for your tooth.  If you get a cavity, Dr. Russo removes the decay and places a permanent filling. If that decay, irritation, or fracture extends and involves the nerve of your tooth, the pulp chamber which holds the nerve of the tooth needs to be cleaned out and a root canal filling placed by Dr. King.

The Root Canal Treatment Is Complete – Now What?

The root canal’s primary focus is to treat the infected area of your nerves and root of the tooth and provide a temporary restoration to the infected tooth.  However, gum problems, wear, damage or the crown becoming loose can all be signs that it is time to replace your crown with a more permanent solution.   Although dental crowns protect your tooth, problems can arise when the crown is damaged, loosened, or falls off. If a dental crown becomes compromised in any way, it may allow bacteria to become trapped underneath the crown which can lead to decay and another infection.

At Russo Dentistry, we help advise and make sure you have the best endodontic care after your root canal and will let you know when a more permanent solution will need to be taken.
