In Case of a Dental Emergency

In Case of a Dental Emergency

When you’ve had an accident that has left you injured, you know that you can go to the emergency room for the care you need. That’s fine for a broken bone or a cut that needs stitches, but what if you’ve experienced a dental emergency? Although some hospitals are able to provide immediate care for dental emergencies, having an emergency dentist on your side can help you save your teeth and prevent bigger problems down the line. Russo Dentistry is proud to be Raleigh’s choice for world class emergency dental care.

Whether you’ve lost a crown, broken a tooth, or have a toothache, dental emergencies can be awfully scary. Here are just a few of the conditions that may require emergency dental care:

  • Sudden toothache: Most people think that a toothache will go away on its own. That’s not necessarily the case. If a toothache is left untreated, it can cause serious oral health problems that could potentially lead to tooth loss.
  • Oral trauma: Chipped, broken, or knocked-out teeth all require immediate attention. Waiting too long to have them treated can lead to infection, tooth loss, and more.
  • Jaw pain: If you have cavities or have recently had an untreated toothache, it may have become infected and caused an abscess, or an infection at the root. This often shows up as jaw pain. If your jaw is swollen as well, the infection may have spread to your salivary glands.
  • Metallic taste: This may mean that you’ve lost a filling or a crown. Fillings and crowns are a way to protect weak teeth from infection, so it’s important to have a dentist clear out bacteria and cover it with a new crown as soon as possible.

Please keep in mind that some dental emergencies, like a broken jaw or excessive bleeding, are better treated at your local hospital. If you have any questions at all about the best treatment for you, our compassionate office staff can point you in the right direction. Should you have trouble reaching us and need care fast, we recommend calling 911 or going to your nearest emergency room.
