Root canals are a simple, straightforward dental procedure that aren’t nearly as nerve-wracking as you think, but that doesn’t mean you want to have them time and again. After you’ve had a root canal, it becomes even more important to stay on top of your oral health with regular checkups and proper at-home care. By making sure that you’re taking good care of your mouth, you’re significantly lowering the chances of needing another root canal – or, for that matter, additional dental procedures.
So, why did you need a root canal in the first place? Root canals become necessary when a tooth has decayed to the point where your tooth’s core – which contains its nerves and blood vessels – has started to decay as well. Performing a root canal allows us to clean out the bacteria, treat the decay with antibiotics, and seal the core to keep new decay from developing. Most of the time, your tooth will be able to stay intact once it’s been cleaned out. It will be fragile, though, which is why it’s critical to follow the post-procedure instructions. They can vary from patient to patient, but in general, here’s what you should do after your root canal:
- Take it easy: Don’t eat anything that requires a lot of chewing for the first day or so after your procedure, especially while you’re still numb. You could damage your tooth. Eat soft foods, like mashed potatoes and pudding, as well as foods that are cold. Not only are they safer to eat; they may also make your mouth feel better!
- Keep it clean: Regular brushing and flossing is a must. Beyond preventing your other teeth from decaying, it will help the tooth we cleaned out during your root canal heal and stay healthy. For the first few days after your procedure, take extra care to brush the tooth very gently. Consider switching out your regular toothbrush for one that has soft bristles.
