Healthy Teeth for the Holidays

Happy holidays from Russo Dentistry! We hope you’re having a wonderful time celebrating with family and friends.

December is full of busy days and holiday sweets. Staying on top of your health can be a challenge. Although you should treat yourself a little bit – after all, it only comes once a year – overdoing it can land you in a world of trouble when the new year rolls around. Maintaining your healthy habits, including good oral health habits, is a holiday gift to yourself that doesn’t cost a dime. Here are some of our favorite dental health tips for the holidays.

  • Be choosy about treats: You don’t need to deprive yourself of your favorite holiday cookies, candies, and cakes in order to keep your teeth healthy, but you should limit them. Save your indulgences for special sweets, like homemade desserts. Don’t jeopardize your oral health for something that isn’t worth the trouble.
  • Have tooth-friendly snacks and sips: When you aren’t out at a holiday bash, stick to your usual healthy diet and incorporate foods that are good for your teeth. Crunchy fruits and veggies, like apples and carrots, are particularly good choices! You’ll also want to make sure you’re drinking plenty of water, which is beneficial for your whole body. Water with fluoride keeps your teeth healthy and can wash away bacteria before it settles in to harm your mouth.
  • Stick to a routine: With shopping for gifts, going to parties, and visiting family all on the holiday agenda, this month can be especially hectic. That’s no reason to abandon your at-home dental health routine! Make sure that you’re still brushing and flossing twice a day. If you’re eating more sweets than usual, you should brush more often.
  • Be proactive: If you have a checkup scheduled for the end of this year or the beginning of next year, be sure you keep it. Many dental practices get booked out months in advance and missing even one dental visit can lead to future problems. If you can’t get on the schedule right away, see if you can be added to a waitlist.

Give yourself the gift of a bright, healthy smile by contacting Russo Dentistry, Raleigh’s premier modern dental practice, to schedule an exam. We wish you health and happiness all month long, and we’re looking forward to making 2022 your best year yet!
